Griffins win 20 for Ninth Straight Year

LEWISTON, Idaho – The 22nd-ranked Westminster men's basketball team won its 20th game of the season with a 95-81 win over Lewis-Clark State on Saturday night.

Westminster improves to 20-6 on the year and into a four-way tie for first place in the Frontier Conference with an 8-4 mark. This is the ninth straight 20-win season for the Griffins and 10th in 12 seasons since the program was reinstated under head coach Tommy Connor in 1999. Lewis-Clark State falls to 15-10 and 5-7 in defeat.

Westminster used an early 13-2 run to turn a 9-8 lead into a 23-12 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. The teams would play even throughout the rest of the first half where Westminster carried a 46-36 advantage into the intermission. The Griffins would eventually push the advantage to 68-51 with 12 minutes left in the second half. LC State would get back to within 11 at the 5:05 mark, but Westminster held them at bay down the stretch.

Westminster shot 56.5% from the floor in the contest and scored 28 points in the paint. They went 7-of-12 (58.3%) from beyond the arc and made 36 of their season-high 42 attempts at the foul line. The Griffins forced LC State into 17 turnovers and scored 15 points from them.

AJ Reilly scored a career-high 26 points behind going 14-of-15 at the charity stripe. Michael Stockton added 25 points behind a perfect 11-of-11 at the foul line with five assists. Jake Orchard added 11 points while Jordan Bjornberg scored seven points with a game-high eight rebounds.

Darwin Stewart led the Warriors with 14 points while David Johnson and Alex King added 13 apiece. LCSC shot 54.7% from the field and scored 42 points in the paint.

Westminster controls its own destiny heading into the final week of the regular season. They need two wins to clinch at least a share of a fourth-straight regular season championship and they begin the final weekend against nationally ranked Montana State-Northern on Friday, February 25 in Havre, Mont.
