SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's volleyball team got a little defensive in a 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 win over Montana Tech on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House. Westminster (8-13, 5-5 Frontier) snapped a six-match losing streak with the win and defeated Tech (7-16, 0-10) for the third straight meeting.
Westminster came up with 65 digs in the match which is a season-high for a three-set match. They also came up with nine blocks for the second-most in a match this year. The Griffins limited the visitors to just .081 hitting and a -.100 in the final stanza.
Three players recorded double figures in digs for Westminster with
Kyndall Kordakis and
Emily Atkinson each getting 14.
Ashley Marchant added 12 digs while leading the offense with 13 kills for her 10th career double-double.
Alexis Aalona,
Kenzie Mitchell and
Stephanie Jones Morin added eight kills apiece as the Griffins finished the night with 48 kills. They hit .264 as a team which is the best in a conference match and second-highest all season. Atkinson had her 10th double-double with 38 assists.
Darla Erker and Shersteen Cline led Tech with eight kills apiece. Korey Krumm added six kills while libero Allyse Cruise popped up 24 digs.
Westminster came out hot in the opening set and finished the frame hitting .318. They had 18 kills in the opening set with Marchant contributing five of them behind a .833 hitting efficiency. The Griffins allowed Tech to hang around with six service errors but, used 18 digs and two blocks to claim the set.
The Griffins struggled early in set two and would find themselves trailing 18-12 thanks to six early hitting errors. They would turn it around with a 13-3 run to end the set behind eight kills and only one error during the run. Marchant picked up the final three Westminster kills while Jones Morin collecting three straight to start the run.
The third set saw the Griffins return to form by hitting .375 with 15 kills and only three errors. They ran out to a 9-1 lead in the final stanza led by two kills from Marchant.
Katie Vance, Aalona and Mitchell each posted multiple blocks during the early run and Westminster would never look back.
Westminster will return to action on Saturday when they host Montana Western in the Behnken Field House. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. in the final Saturday home game of the season.
