Walch Tallies Only Goal in Griffins 1-0 Win over Carroll

SALT LAKE CITY – Corie Walch scored in the 14th minute to lead the Westminster College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 23 Carroll on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.

Westminster improves to 7-4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Frontier Conference with the victory.  Carroll slips to 5-3-1 and 1-1.

The Griffins were on the attack throughout the first half and finished the opening stanza with a 14-2 advantage in shots attempted.  They came through with a goal in the 14th minute on the second goal of the year for Walch.  The ball started on the wing and was played into the box by Justine JonesMargo Hickman then tapped it to Walch who fired the ball into the upper corner for the game-winner.

Hickman had two shots from close range turned away by the Carroll keeper in the 30th minute.  The first was shot from15 yards and then she fired the rebound and was also denied.  Carissa Cooper had another opportunity stopped from 10 yards out in the 36th minute.

Westminster finished the afternoon with a 19-5 advantage in total shots attempted and put 13 of those shots on goal.  Each team was awarded three corner kicks and the Griffins were whistled for seven fouls.

Hickman fired a team-high six shots with five on frame.  Sarah Swenson and Alyssa Hill each got four shots away with Hill putting three on frame.  Dayna Winter-Nolte earned the win in the Westminster goal with two saves, including the final Carroll opportunity in the 89th minute.

The Griffins will return to action on Saturday, October 8 when they host Marymount (Calif.) College at 1 p.m. at Dumke Field.  The game is senior day and the 11 Westminster seniors will be recognized before the game.
