Three More Home Games for Men’s Soccer

Point Loma Nazarene, Sterling College, and Embry-Riddle (AZ) visit Dumke this week.

The Westminster men's soccer team concludes the season opening seven-game home stand with three games this weekend. The 17th-ranked Griffins face Point Loma Nazarene on Friday, September 10 and then face Sterling College on Saturday, September 11. The home stand concludes on Sunday, September 12 against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). All games will be played at Dumke Field on the campus of Westminster College.

Westminster enters the week at 3-1 overall after picking up two wins last weekend. They defeated Northwestern (Iowa) 1-0 in overtime and then picked up a 2-1 win over Olivet Nazarene. Westminster entered the NAIA Top 25 poll for the first time since 2007.

The Griffins have scored five goals this season and are averaging 1.12 per game. They have attempted 54 shots and put 25 on frame and scored on 9.3% of those total shots. Westminster has also taken 15 corner kicks and posted three assists. On the defensive side, Westminster has allowed three goals and just 30 shots by the opposition. Griffin opponents average 7.5 shots per game and put 50% of those on goal.

Dennis Sellis leads the team with three goals and six points. Sellis scored both game winners during last week's action and has attempted 11 shots. Nic Duncan and Jace Maxfield have one goal apiece with Duncan also recording one assist and taking 11 shots. Wilson Larson and Jonathan Parker have tallied one goal apiece.

Damir Sabanovic and Nate Young have split time in goal with Sabanovic recording two wins and one shutout. He has a 0.47 goals against average with seven saves and an 87.5% save percentage. Young has made five saves with a 71.4% save percentage.

Westminster will broadcast select men's soccer games throughout the season on Griffins TV. The Westminster Athletics Department teamed up with Penn Atlantic to offer fans the opportunity to watch Westminster home events on the internet for FREE. Dumke Field
All Westminster men's soccer home games are played at Dumke Field on the campus of Westminster College. Gates open one hour prior to the start of the game. The spectator entrance is located on the northwest side of the field. Pets are NOT allowed into the Dumke Field facility at any time.

First Kick
• The No. 17 ranking is the highest for the Griffins since 2001 when they were 15th.

• The Griffins have gone 9-2-1 at home the past two seasons.

• Westminster has outshot the opponent 33-16 after halftime this season.

Scouting Point Loma Nazarene
Point Loma Nazarene comes to town with a 2-0 record and having outscored the opposition 6-0 this season. They opened with a 4-0 win over Indiana Wesleyan and then claimed a 2-0 win against San Diego Christian. Austin Fares leads the Sea Lions with two goals and five points and four other players have one goal each. Keith Cline has recorded three saves in picking up both wins.

Scouting Sterling College
Sterling College makes the trip from Sterling, Kansas with a 1-1-1 record in 2010. They earned a 1-1 draw against Central Christian College in their last outing on September 7. Kyle Burns leads the team with two goals and three shots on goal. Michael Wales and Zdravko Gerganoff have also scored for Sterling. Riley Zelus has a 63.6% save percentage at goalie.

Scouting Embry-Riddle (AZ)
Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) comes to SLC with a 1-4 record this season. After opening the season with three losses, the Eagles have split the last two outings. They have been outscored 12-4 in the first five games of the year. Magi Manresa leads the team with three points behind one goal and one assist. Thiago Caetano leads the team with eight shots on goal while scoring one goal. Jeremy Meduvsky has made 25 saves in between the pipes.

Weekly Honors
Damir Sabanovic and Dennis Sellis, both of Westminster College were named Frontier Conference men's soccer players of the week. Sabanovic recorded two saves for the week and earned a shutout in his appearance against Northwestern. Sellis scored three goals including the game winning goal in both games. He scored both goals in the game against Olivet Nazarene.

Dumke Advantage
Since starting play on Dumke Field in 2006, Westminster has compiled a 28-8-2 record on its home field. They haven't lost more than once on the field since 2007 and have won six of the last seven games played there. The Griffins have outscored the opposition 90-33 in the 38 games played at Dumke Field.

Postseason Appearances
Westminster has made 19 postseason appearances in the 27 seasons they have competed. The Griffins have qualified for postseason play every season since 2005. The last two seasons they have qualified for the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament where they have lost in the semi-finals each season.

Unaffiliated Information
The Dakota Athletic Conference, Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Frontier Conference will combine to offer one automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in 2010. The top-4 teams in this group will advance to the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with the winner receiving the automatic berth.

Looking Ahead
The Griffins hit the road for the first time in 2010 with games against MidAmerica Nazarene, Baker University, and Kansas Wesleyan on September 17-19 respectively.
