IRVINE, Calif. – The Westminster women's volleyball team bounced back and recorded two wins at the Asics/Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament on Saturday. Westminster began the day with a 3-0 sweep of sixth-ranked Biola. They came back in the evening to claim a 3-2 win over Westmont to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record.
The Griffins pulled out an entertaining match with Biola by scores of 33-31, 26-24, 27-25. The Griffins held four point leads late in each set, only to see Biola rally and force extra points each time. Westminster was solid offensively all match as they finished with 48 kills and a .250 hitting efficiency. The Griffins also posted 60 digs and six blocks against the Eagles.
Clotile Harris led the Griffins with 13 kills despite missing most of set two and all of set three with an injury.
Ericka Evans picked up the slack following the Harris injury and finished with 10 kills and a .321 hitting efficiency. Evans also racked up 13 digs and two blocks. Stephanie Jones added seven kills with
Ashley Marchant contributing six.
Kyndall Kordakis had 16 digs at libero.
Against Westmont, Westminster took the opening two sets fairly easy by matching scores of 25-17. After Westmont took sets three and four by scores of 25-20 and 25-15, the Griffins responded with a 15-10 win in the deciding set. Westminster hit .160 in the match including .227 in the fifth set. They had 49 total kills and 18.5 blocks.
Again playing without Harris, Evans and Jones went for 10 kills apiece to lead the Griffins. They each added seven blocks with Evans recording 12 digs.
Katie Vance came through with eight kills and a career high 10 blocks. Marchant and
Kenzie Mitchell added eight seven and six kills respectively. Kordakis added another 14 digs.
Westminster is now 4-4 on the season heading into the Frontier Conference opener at Rocky Mountain College on September 9. That match will being at 7 p.m. in Billings, Montana.
