Women’s Volleyball Welcomes Lewis-Clark State

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster volleyball team welcomes 11th-ranked Lewis-Clark State College to the Behnken Field House for the only match of the week. Westminster and LCSC will conclude the first half of the Frontier Conference regular season with a 7 p.m. match on Friday, October 1.

The Griffins go into the match with an 8-6 overall record and 4-2 in the Frontier Conference. They are riding a four-match winning streak after opening 0-2 in conference play. The winning streak is the longest for the Griffins since 2008. Westminster claimed road wins at Great Falls and Montana State-Northern last week. They enter this week 4-2 at home this season.

The team is averaging 12 kills per set with a hitting efficiency of .191. The Griffins hit .277 and .243 in the two matches last week to raise the efficiency number to rank fourth in the Frontier. Westminster is second in the conference with an average of 1.8 service aces per set while the 92 total aces are third-best. Defensively they allow the opposition to hit just .187 and post 2.1 blocks per set. Westminster also collects 14 digs per set.

Clotile Harris leads the Frontier Conference with her 205 total kills and also with her 4.46 kills per set average. Harris has posted double digit kills in seven straight matches and has gone for at least 20 four times this season. Emily Atkinson is second in the conference in assists at 9.2 per set. Her 478 total assists rank fourth in the conference and is already the seventh-best total for a season in school history. Katie Vance has a team-high 41 total blocks while Kyndall Kordakis has racked up 188 digs.

Scouting No. 11 Lewis-Clark State
Lewis-Clark State College comes to town with a 15-1 overall record and a perfect 6-0 in the Frontier Conference. The Warriors picked up road wins at Montana State-Northern and Great Falls last week to run the current winning streak to 11 straight matches. They average 2.7 service aces per set and rank sixth in the NAIA in that department while ranking in the NAIA Top 50 in seven statistical categories. Deddiy Alaimaleata is second in the country with her .425 hitting efficiency while Kelli Tikker leads the team with 164 kills. Lauryn Herrick is 13th nationally with 40 service aces and Nicole Graybeal ranks ninth with her average of 1.4 blocks per set.

700/700 Club
Senior Ericka Evans sits just 11 kills and five digs away from becoming just the second member of the 700 Kills/700 Digs Club at Westminster. Evans is averaging 1.7 kills per set this season to go with her 2.6 digs per set average. Ali Culp is the only other Griffin to post 700 career kills and 700 career digs. Culp finished her career with 989 kills and 870 digs.

Reaching 100
Head coach Kim Norman notched her 100th career victory with the 3-0 win over Montana Western on September 16. Norman has recorded 103 career victories against 94 losses for a .523 win percentage in seven seasons on the Griffins bench. In conference play, Norman is 57-33 entering the week for a win percentage of .633.

Receiving Votes
Westminster received 36 points in the fourth edition of the Tachikara-NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, announced Tuesday by the NAIA. After being ranked No. 20 in the first poll, Westminster now sits sixth among the others receiving votes.

Notable Performance
Clotile Harris was named Frontier Conference volleyball player of the week on August 31. This is her first weekly award from the conference and she becomes the first Griffin to claim the weekly honor this season. Harris averaged 4.76 kills with a .305 hitting percentage. She also averaged 1.41 digs and .59 assisted blocks. She posted 20-plus kills in each of the final three matches, including 25 kills against the College of Idaho on August 27.

Griffins Picked to Finish Fifth
The Frontier Conference released the annual women's volleyball preseason coaches' poll on August 12 and Westminster was selected to finish fifth. The Griffins received 23 points in the poll of the eight head coaches in the conference. Frontier Conference regular season co-champion and conference tournament champion Lewis-Clark State College received six first place votes and was the preseason favorite of the league's volleyball coaches to win the conference title for the 2010 season.

Next Week
The Griffins will take a week off from Frontier Conference action to play Mesa State College. The match against the NCAA DII foe is slated for October 7 at 7 p.m. in Grand Junction, Colorado.
