Great Falls Takes 2-1 Overtime Decision against Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision against Great Falls in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field. Westminster (7-4, 0-1 Frontier) suffers a third consecutive loss and drops the Frontier Conference opener. They also lose at Dumke Field for just the second time in eight games this season.

Miguel Mendez gave Great Falls (4-2, 1-1) an early 1-0 lead when he blasted a shot inside the near post on a pass from David Jimenez in the 23rd minute. Westminster tallied the equalizer in the 34th minute when Matt Jimenez headed home a Josh Questereit direct kick. It was the sixth career goal for Jimenez and his first this season. The assist by Questereit was the first of his career.

The game would remain tied at 1-1 through the regulation 90 minutes. UGF would score the game winner in the 96th minute when Ryan O'Neil got his head on a direct kick from William Obregon and put it past Griffin keeper Nathan Young for the victory.

Westminster attempted 16 shots in the contest and held a 16-10 advantage in that category. However, each team put five shots on goal. Westminster also finished with a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks while Great Falls was whistled for being offsides three times. The game featured 23 combined fouls and five yellow cards.

Gabe Gonzalez led the Griffin attack with four shots and put one on goal. Jace Maxfield fired three shots while Damian Malouf, Questereit, and Jimenez each got two shots away. Questereit was the only Griffin with multiple shots on frame. Young recorded three saves, including two stops of O'Neil on breakaways.

Westminster will be back in action on Sunday, October 3 when they host Rocky Mountain College at 2 p.m. The game is Senior Day for six Westminster seniors playing at Dumke Field for the final time.
