SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team claimed a 2-0 victory over Great Falls in the Frontier Conference opener for each team on Sunday afternoon. Westminster scored two second half goals and won for the third consecutive outing. The win improves the Griffins to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Frontier Conference.
After playing a scoreless first half, Westminster took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute when
Nicole Taylor headed home a direct kick from
Sarah Swenson following a UGF (1-4, 0-1) yellow card. It was the first goal of the season for the Griffins junior midfielder. Westminster made it 2-0 when
Brianna Wilson had her cross knocked in by a Great Falls defender for an own goal in the 56th minute.
Westminster dictated much of the action and finished with a 16-3 advantage in shots attempted. The Griffins put 11 of those attempts on frame and took five corner kicks. The Griffins were called offsides 11 times.
Swenson attempted a team-high five shots in the contest. Her assist was her first of the season and school-record seventh of her career. Wilson,
Vanessa Jordan, and
Bettina Oesch all posted two shot attempts in the game with Wilson putting both her shots on frame.
Lindsay Bekken posted two saves between the pipes in recording her fifth shutout of the season. The reigning NAIA Defensive Player of the Week has now posted three straight shutouts and not allowed in goal in 270 minutes.
Westminster is back in action on Saturday, September 25 when they face Eastern Oregon in Caldwell, Idaho.
