Griffins Sweep Tech behind Strong Serving Effort

SALT LAKE CITY – It wasn't the prettiest match for the Westminster women's volleyball team, yet they found a way to record a 3-0 sweep of Montana Tech on Saturday afternoon in the Behnken Field House. Westminster (6-6, 2-2 Frontier) overcame a tough offensive night by recording a season high 13 service aces. Montana Tech (9-8, 1-3) kept fighting, but couldn't get over their passing struggles.

Westminster took the opening set 25-21 behind five service aces and 13 kills. Although Tech managed to hit .267 in the set, Westminster kept attacking. Stephanie Jones, Clotile Harris, and Kenzie Mitchell all recorded three kills in the opening set with Harris and Katie Vance posting two service aces.

Westminster jumped out early in set two and behind 13 kills and three aces they took the set 25-21. Westminster hit just .175 in the second set, but used solid defense to win the frame. The Griffins limited the visitors to -.038 hitting and recorded 14 digs and three blocks. Jones came through with fie kills and hit .714 in the second stanza.

The third set appeared to be all Griffins. They led 19-10 and seemed to be cruising to a three-set sweep. Then Montana Tech stormed all the way back and forced ties at 19-19 and again at 20-20. Westminster again used tough serving to win the set, posting five more aces. They struggled on offense in the deciding set with just 12 kills and a -.021 hitting efficiency. Harris posted six kills in the third, including two crucial ones late.

Westminster hit .094 in the match with 38 kills and 26 errors. They were better defensively with fie blocks and 47 digs while limiting Tech to a .086 hitting efficiency. Harris led the way with her 11 kills and Jones added nine kills and hit .400. Mitchell added seven kills while Ericka Evans and Kyndall Kordakis posted 11 and nine digs respectively.

Cassie Hodges led Tech with eight kills while also posting four blocks. The Orediggers had 13 blocks in the match and posted 52 digs. Katie Daly recorded a team leading eight blocks and libero Allyse Cruise had 19 digs.

Westminster will return to action on September 23 when they open a two-game road trip at Great Falls.
