Women’s Soccer Heads to Florida

Two games slated for Labor Day Weekend

SALT LAKE CITY - The Westminster women's soccer team is going to spend Labor Day Weekend in South Florida for two games against teams from The Sun Conference. Westminster plays Northwood (Fla.) in West Palm beach, Florida on Saturday, September 4. After a day off, the Griffins visit Miami for a game against Saint Thomas (Fla.) on Monday, September 6.

Westminster heads to Florida with a 1-2-1 overall record after splitting two games on Dumke Field last week. The Griffins picked up a 1-0 overtime victory over Northwest Nazarene and then dropped a 2-1 decision against Westmont College.

Westminster has scored just two goals this season and has been outscored 5-2 in the opening four games. They currently are tied for first in the NAIA with two shutouts and rank 18th nationally in total saves with 17.

Heather Hillam and Sarah Swenson have each scored one goal this season to lead the Griffins. They are tied for sixth in the Frontier Conference in goals per game at 0.5 per contest. Swenson is tied for sixth nationally with her one game winning goal. Lisa Johnson is tied for first in the conference and 40th nationally with her one assist. Lindsay Bekken has posted 16 saves to rank 13th in the NAIA and first in the Frontier.

First Kick
• The Griffins overtime goal against Northwest Nazarene snapped a string of 430 minutes without a goal dating back to 2009.

• Westminster is 0-1-1 away from Dumke Field this season and hasn't scored a road goal.

• The trip to Florida is the farthest east the Griffin have traveled in the history of the program.

Scouting Northwood
Northwood enters the Westminster game with a 2-0 record after picking up a 4-1 win over Southern Wesleyan and a 13-0 defeat of Johnson & Wales last week. Annika Hogberg leads the team with five goals and ranks second nationally with the total. Her 6.5 shots per game is the third-best total in the NAIA. Mia Moeller leads the team with two saves between the pipes.

Scouting Saint Thomas
Saint Thomas enters the week having yet to play a game in 2010. They face Florida Tech on September 4, prior to hosting the Griffins. They finished 6-9-2 overall in 2009 and placed fifth in The Sun Conference with a 5-2-1 record. Top returners for the Bobcats 2010 season include Adriana Rodriguez, Shante Chevannes, and Ariana Lorezo, named a Conference player of the week last season.

When it Counts
Sarah Swenson scored nine minutes into overtime against Northwest Nazarene for the fifth game winning goal of her career. Swenson has scored seven goals during her career and her last four goals have all been game winners. Her five game winners are tied for first in school history.

All-Conference Performer
Corie Walch returns for 2010 after being named All-Frontier Conference last season. She became just the fourth player in Westminster history to be named all-conference. Walch made the team at midfield. This season, she has recorded two shots in her 236 minutes played.

Record Chasing
Several players enter the season either in reach of school career records or as the current leader. Vanessa Jordan, Sarah Swenson, and Maddie Spere are all tied with six career assists which is tops in school history. Spere holds the record with 44 games started and is second in school history with nine goals scored. Rachel Watson has appeared in a school-best 61 games.

Unaffiliated Information
The Dakota Athletic Conference, Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Frontier Conference will combine to offer one automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in 2010. The top-4 teams in this group will advance to the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with the winner receiving the automatic berth.

Looking Ahead
The Griffins open a three-game home stand when they host Point Loma Nazarene on September 10 at 11 a.m. The home stretch continues on September 12 against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) and concludes on September 19 with the Frontier Conference opener against Great Falls.
