Spikers Visit No. 9 Lewis-Clark State to Conclude Regular Season

SALT LAKE CITY – The 2010 regular season will conclude for the Westminster women's volleyball team with a trip to Lewiston, Idaho to face ninth-ranked Lewis-Clark State. Westminster will face LC State on Friday, November 5 at 7 p.m. in the Lewiston Activity Center. The Griffins have dropped eight straight meetings with the Warriors.

Westminster will hit the road at 11-11 on the season and 7-6 in the Frontier Conference. They have won two straight matches and three of the last four. The Griffins are 5-6 in matches away from the Behnken Field House and 3-5 in true road matches this season.

At 11.8 kills per set, Westminster ranks fifth in the Frontier Conference in that category. The Griffins have collected 970 kills this season with a .177 hitting efficiency. They average 10.8 assists per set and are third in the conference with 134 service aces. Defensively, Westminster averages 1.8 blocks and 14.8 digs per set while holding the opposition to a .193 hitting efficiency.

Stephanie Jones leads the team with a .276 hitting efficiency and has recorded 156 kills. Jones has added 26 service aces and 52 blocks. Kenzie Mitchell raised her hitting efficiency to .201 over the weekend and averages 1.79 kills per set. Ericka Evans has recorded 154 kills and 235 digs to rank second in each category. Emily Atkinson leads the squad with 731 assists while adding 20 service aces. Katie Vance leads the team with 54 blocks with Kyndall Kordakis posting a team-best 334 digs.

Scouting No. 9 Lewis-Clark State
Lewis-Clark State enters the week with a 15-match winning streak and with a 23-1 overall record. They are 13-0 in the Frontier Conference and are ranked ninth in the latest NAIA Top 25 coaches' poll. They defeated the Griffins 3-1 on October 1 in Salt Lake City. The Warriors can be found in the top three of the Frontier statistical ranking in every category. They average 2.42 service aces per set to rank 14th in the NAIA. Deddiy Alaimaleata is ranked ninth in the NAIA with a .386 hitting efficiency. Kelli Tikker has a team-best 250 kills to go with 28 service aces. Lauryn Herrick has posted 49 service aces while ranking 18th nationally in service aces per set at 0.6.

Down the Stretch
Westminster enters the final match of the regular season having already clinched the No. 4 seed in next week's Frontier Conference Tournament. The Griffins are 7-6 in conference action and sit two games behind Carroll for third place and two games ahead of fifth-place Montana Tech. Westminster will finish at .500 or above for the fifth time in the past seven seasons.

Frontier Tournament
Lewis-Clark State will once again play host to this season's Frontier Conference Tournament. All eight team qualify for the two-day event which begins on Friday, November 12 with four quarterfinal matches. The semi-finals are on Saturday, November 13 in the afternoon with the championship match slated for 8 p.m. (MDT) on the 13th. If the tournament was slated for today, Westminster would be the No. 4 seed and face Montana Tech in the opening round.

700/700 Club
With seven kills at Mesa State on October 7, senior Ericka Evans became just the second member of the 700 Kills/700 Digs Club at Westminster. Evans is averaging 1.90 kills per set this season to go with her 2.90 digs per set average. She now has 746 kills and 784 digs in her career. Ali Culp is the only other Griffin to post 700 career kills and 700 career digs. Culp finished her career with 989 kills and 870 digs.

Reaching 100
Head coach Kim Norman notched her 100th career victory with the 3-0 win over Montana Western on September 16. Norman has recorded 106 career victories against 99 losses for a .517 win percentage in seven seasons on the Griffins bench. In conference play, Norman is 60-37 entering the week for a win percentage of .619.

Overtime Excellence
With two more sets going into extra points last week, Westminster has now played 11 sets that have gone past the set limit. The Griffins went 2-0 last week and are now 8-3 in sets that go into overtime. The highest score they have played this season was a 33-31 victory over No. 6 Biola in the first set of a September 4 match. Westminster dropped a 30-28 set to No. 16 College of Idaho in the first set of a match on August 27.

Even Scoring
Through 22 matches this season Westminster has been outscored by the opposition 1,705-1,754. The Griffins have been outscored 501-493 in the first set, but bounce back to win the second set 495-490. The Griffins trail in the other three sets including a 477-474 deficit in set three.

Next Week
Westminster will return to Lewiston, Idaho for the Frontier Conference Tournament. The times of the opening round matches will be announced on Sunday by the Frontier Conference. The opening round will be played on Friday, November 12.
