SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team picked up a second victory over a ranked opponent this season with a 2-1 win against No. 22 Carroll College on Tuesday afternoon at Dumke Field. Westminster (7-5-1, 2-1 Frontier) scored twice in the first half to help them bounce back from a loss to Rocky Mountain College over the weekend.
Heather Hillam put the Griffins ahead 1-0 in the 20th minute when she got her head on a ball being delivered from a corner kick by
Vanessa Jordan. Hillam put the ball inside the post for her team-leading fourth goal of the season and gave Jordan her school recorded seventh career assist.
The lead would grow to 2-0 in the 23rd minute when
Corie Walch played a through ball to
Nicole Taylor who then managed to slide it past the keeper for the eventual game winner. It was the second goal of the season for Taylor and her second game-winning strike.
Carroll (7-3-1, 1-1) would continue to pressure and got on the board in the 49th minute when Meghan O'Connell rebounded a blast from Abby Coburn that was turned away, but not controlled by Griffin keeper
Lindsay Bekken. It was the seventh goal of the season for the Frontier Conference leading O'Connell.
Westminster finished the game with an 11-4 advantage in shots attempted, although they were forced into solid defense in the final 10 minutes to keep Carroll off the board. The Griffins managed to put six attempts on frame while the Carroll goal was the only shot they put on target. Westminster also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks taken.
Taylor led the Griffin attack with three shots and two shots on goal. She got support from Walch and
Sarah Swenson who each posted two shots while four other Griffins got away one attempt. Bekken earned her eighth win of the season between the pipes without making any saves.
Westminster will now take 10 days off before facing Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in Prescott, Ariz. on October 15. The Griffins will also face Southwestern (Ariz.) on October 16 during the trip to Arizona.
