SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team scored twice in the first half to lead them to a 2-0 win over Rocky Mountain College on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Griffins and draws them even in Frontier Conference action. Westminster is now 8-4 on the year at 1-1 in the conference while dropping Rocky to 6-5 and 1-2 in the Frontier.
Jace Maxfield started the scoring for the Griffins when he finished a cross from
Gabe Gonzalez in the 36th minute to make it 1-0 for Westminster. It was the fourth goal of the season for Maxfield and turned into his second game winner. The game would become 2-0 less than two minutes later when
Nic Duncan would collect a pass from
Jonathan Parker and bury into the top of the net from 25 yards away for his fourth goal of the season.
The game was even played throughout with Westminster holding a slight 14-12 advantage in shots attempted. The Griffins were a little more accurate, putting eight shots on frame to just three by Rocky. The Griffins also held an 8-3 cushion in corner kicks while committing 10 fouls to the seven by the guests.
Maxfield and
Spencer Luczak each attempted thee shots in the game to lead the Griffins. They also matched
Damian Malouf for top honors with two shots on goal. In total, eight different Westminster players recorded at least one shot attempt.
Damir Sabanovic earned his third shutout of the season with three saves. He now has a 0.39 GAA in five games played this season.
Westminster will finish the year with six straight road games, starting at Bellevue University on October 9. They will also face Hastings on the trip to Nebraska on October 10.
