Women’s Volleyball Hits the Road in Conference Action

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's volleyball team heads to Montana for two games in Frontier Conference action this weekend. The Griffins open the trip at Montana Western on October 22 in Dillon. The trip ends in Butte against Montana Tech on October 23.

Westminster heads to Big Sky Country with an 8-10 overall record and at 4-5 in the Frontier Conference. They have currently lost four straight games and are tied for fourth place in the conference. They dropped two home matches to No. 21 Rocky Mountain College and No. 25 Carroll College last week.

The team is averaging 11.7 kills per set while posting a .172 hitting efficiency. Their 786 total kills ranks sixth in the Frontier Conference and they rank fourth in assists per set at 10.8. Westminster is averaging 1.6 service aces per set to rank second in the conference. Defensively they collect 14.4 digs with 1.9 blocks per set.

Clotile Harris leads the conference with 251 kills and her 4.11 kills per set are 17th in the NAIA. Harris posted her first career double-double with 23 kills and 16 digs against Carroll last Saturday. Stephanie Jones leads the team with a .262 hitting efficiency to rank sixth in the conference. Emily Atkinson has recorded 594 assists this season with Kyndall Kordakis grabbing 270 digs. Jones at Katie Vance has posted 48 blocks apiece.

Scouting Montana Western
Montana Western brings a 1-18 overall record into the week and are 0-9 in the Frontier Conference. They have lost 16 consecutive matches overall and 24 consecutive Frontier Conference matches dating back to 2008. Kayla Schmid leads the team with 109 kills while hitting .117. Alisha Kearsley has recorded 390 assists and 20 service aces while Shelby Mack has 269 digs.

Scouting Montana Tech
Montana Tech enters the week at 12-10 overall and tied for fourth in the Frontier at 4-5. They have won three straight matches after dropping nine of 10 before the current streak. Katie Daly has a team-best 225 kills with a .236 hitting efficiency. Allyse Cruise leads the team with 20 service aces and 267 digs.

Down the Stretch
Westminster enters the final five game of the regular season in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Frontier Conference. They face each of the two teams they are tied with down the final stretch, starting with Montana Tech on Saturday. The Griffins are two games behind Rocky Mountain and Carroll for second place. The fourth and fifth place teams will meet in the first round of the conference tournament in November.

700/700 Club
With seven kills at Mesa State, senior Ericka Evans became just the second member of the 700 Kills/700 Digs Club at Westminster. Evans is averaging 1.76 kills per set this season to go with her 2.69 digs per set average. She now has 706 kills and 717 digs in her career. Ali Culp is the only other Griffin to post 700 career kills and 700 career digs. Culp finished her career with 989 kills and 870 digs.

Reaching 100
Head coach Kim Norman notched her 100th career victory with the 3-0 win over Montana Western on September 16. Norman has recorded 103 career victories against 96 losses for a .518 win percentage in seven seasons on the Griffins bench. In conference play, Norman is 57-34 entering the week for a win percentage of .626.

Receiving Votes
Westminster received one point in the seventh edition of the Tachikara-NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, announced Tuesday by the NAIA. After being ranked No. 20 in the first poll, Westminster now sits 12th among the others receiving votes.

Notable Performance
Clotile Harris was named Frontier Conference volleyball player of the week on August 31. This is her first weekly award from the conference and she becomes the first Griffin to claim the weekly honor this season. Harris averaged 4.76 kills with a .305 hitting percentage. She also averaged 1.41 digs and .59 assisted blocks. She posted 20-plus kills in each of the final three matches, including 25 kills against the College of Idaho on August 27.
