Women’s Volleyball Welcomes Two Ranked Opponents

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster volleyball team plays two Frontier Conference games at home this week against two Top 25 teams. The Griffins welcome No, 21 Rocky Mountain College to the Behnken Field House on October 14 at 7 p.m. No. 25 Carroll visits Salt Lake City on October 16 at 2 p.m.

Westminster enters the week at 8-8 overall and fourth in the Frontier Conference with a 4-3 record. After a four-game winning streak, Westminster has now dropped two straight including a 3-0 loss at Mesa State last Thursday. The Griffins are 4-3 in the Behnken Field House this season and are 2-5 against ranked teams this season.

The team ranks fifth in the Frontier Conference with 696 kills with a .180 hitting efficiency. They average 10.8 assists and have 99 service aces. They are second in the conference with an average of 1.7 aces per set. Defensively the Griffins average two blocks and 14.1 digs per set.

Clotile Harris leads the Frontier with 226 kills and her average of 4.3 per set is also tops in the conference. Harris has a team-best 22 service aces to go with 71 digs and 29 blocks this season. Stephanie Jones is seventh in the Frontier with a .258 hitting efficiency. Emily Atkinson is second in the conference with an average of 8.8 assist per set while recording 100 digs. Kyndall Kordakis leads the team with 223 digs and is sixth in the conference in that department.

Scouting No. 21 Rocky Mountain
Rocky Mountain enters the week with a 15-5 overall record and 5-2 in the Frontier Conference. The 21st-ranked Battlin' Bears have won five straight matches, all by 3-0 sweeps, and claimed a 3-0 win over Westminster in Billings on September 9. Sara Brunner leads RMC with 175 kills while Jessica Overstreet has 141 kills and a .342 hitting efficiency. Kristin Barrott has recorded 645 assists with 29 service aces.

Scouting No. 25 Carroll
Carroll begins the week at 16-7 overall and 5-2 in the Frontier Conference. They face No. 9 Lewis-Clark State prior to their match in SLC against the Griffins. The Saints went 2-2 last weekend, picking up wins over College of the Ozarks and Benedictine. Haylee Otteson leads the team with 221 kills and is the reigning Frontier Conference Player of the Week. Kristin Telin and Sammy Priddy give the team three players with 200-plus kills as they have posted 219 and 214 respectively. Maureen Frauenholtz has a team-best 409 digs and 26 service aces.

700/700 Club
With seven kills at Mesa State, senior Ericka Evans became just the second member of the 700 Kills/700 Digs Club at Westminster. Evans is averaging 1.76 kills per set this season to go with her 2.69 digs per set average. She now has 706 kills and 717 digs in her career. Ali Culp is the only other Griffin to post 700 career kills and 700 career digs. Culp finished her career with 989 kills and 870 digs.

Reaching 100
Head coach Kim Norman notched her 100th career victory with the 3-0 win over Montana Western on September 16. Norman has recorded 103 career victories against 96 losses for a .518 win percentage in seven seasons on the Griffins bench. In conference play, Norman is 57-34 entering the week for a win percentage of .626.

Receiving Votes
Westminster received 20 points in the sixth edition of the Tachikara-NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, announced Tuesday by the NAIA. After being ranked No. 20 in the first poll, Westminster now sits seventh among the others receiving votes.

Notable Performance
Clotile Harris was named Frontier Conference volleyball player of the week on August 31. This is her first weekly award from the conference and she becomes the first Griffin to claim the weekly honor this season. Harris averaged 4.76 kills with a .305 hitting percentage. She also averaged 1.41 digs and .59 assisted blocks. She posted 20-plus kills in each of the final three matches, including 25 kills against the College of Idaho on August 27.

Griffins Picked to Finish Fifth
The Frontier Conference released the annual women's volleyball preseason coaches' poll on August 12 and Westminster was selected to finish fifth. The Griffins received 23 points in the poll of the eight head coaches in the conference. Frontier Conference regular season co-champion and conference tournament champion Lewis-Clark State College received six first place votes and was the preseason favorite of the league's volleyball coaches to win the conference title for the 2010 season.

Next Week
The Griffins will travel to Montana for the final time this season for two matches. They visit Dillon to face Montana Western on October 22. The next day the Griffins will play Montana Tech in Butte.
