Box Score DILLON, Mont. – Brandon Lawson scored 25 points to lead the University of Montana Western Bulldogs to an 82-76 men's Frontier Conference victory over the Westminster College Griffins in a battle of nationally ranked teams.
The Bulldogs entered the weekend ranked No. 25 while Westminster was ranked No. 10.
Montana Western took control early in the first half scoring the game's first seven points. The Griffins scored their first basket at the 16:48 mark. Westminster then outscored the Bulldogs 23-11 over the next six minutes to take their first lead of the game, 23-18 with 8:19 left in the first half.
Over the next three minutes, there were four lead changes. Garrett Fink's basket at the 2:50 mark gave the Bulldogs a 26-25 lead and it was a lead they would not lose. Montana Western led 34-27 at the half.
In the second half, Westminster opened with a 3-point field by
Blair Prowse to cut the Bulldog lead to 34-30, but that was as close as the Griffins would get. Montana Western extended their lead to 15 at the 13:37 mark.
The Bulldogs maintained a double digit lead until late in the game. Westminster used fouls to gain possessions and answered the Bulldog made free throws with three point baskets.
Westminster committed 12 turnovers that the Bulldogs converted into 21 points. Montana Western played nearly error free basketball as they turned the ball over only five times.
Also scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs were JaRon Brown with 15, Brandon Brown with 14, Garrett Fink with 11 and Layne Glaus with 10. Fink and Lawson shared rebounding honors as they both pulled down 10 rebounds.
Prowse led the Griffins in scoring with 29 points followed by
Ben Walker and
Weston Anderson with 14 points a piece.
Michael Stockton led Westminster in rebounds with 10.
Montana Western is now 3-1 in the Frontier and 15-5 overall while Westminster falls to 3-1 in league play and 13-5 overall.
