Women’s Volleyball Drops Two Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. – The Westminster women's volleyball team went 0-2 during the first day of the Asics/Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament hosted by Concordia (Calif.) University. Westminster fell 3-1 against Oklahoma City in the day's first match. They then lost 3-1 at No. 10 Vanguard to end the day. Westminster is now 2-8 on the season with two more matches on Saturday.

Westminster won the opening set against Oklahoma City 25-17 before dropping the next three sets by the two-point mandatory, 24-26, 24-26, 23-25. Ashley Marchant paced the Griffins with a career high 18 kills while hitting .341. Talita Kresser finished with nine kills and a .444 hitting efficiency. As a team, Westminster hit a season-best .282 and recorded 59 kills. They also piled up 66 digs and 11 blocks.

The night cap saw the Griffins give No. 10 Vanguard everything they could handle on their home floor. Westminster scored the final three points of the opening set for a 29-27 win. Vanguard took the second and third sets by identical 25-17 scores. Westminster held a 23-19 advantage in the fourth set, before a rally by Vanguard to take a 30-28 win and the match. Marchant led Westminster with 14 kills, while Kresser added eight and Ericka Evans finished with seven.

Westminster will face Northwest (Wash.) in a 10:00 a.m. match on Saturday, and finish with a 6:00 p.m. match against No. 3 Cal Baptist. After Saturday's matches, the Griffins will have faced five of the NAIA top 25 over the first three weeks of the season.
