SALT LAKE CITY –
Dennis Sellis scored two second half goals to help the Westminster men's soccer team to a fourth consecutive victory on Monday afternoon at Dumke Field. Westminster and Great Falls played a scoreless opening 45 minutes, and then each team raised the offensive pressure in the second half for the 2-1 win by the Griffins. The win improves Westminster to 7-5-1 on the season.
Sellis put the Griffins ahead 1-0 on the 52nd minute when he held off a Great Falls defender, collected a cross from
Jeff Gardner, and then turned and blasted his sixth goal of the season. Great Falls answered quickly, getting a goal from Ryan O'Neil in the 55th minute on a breakaway after an excellent through ball from Chris Worthen.
The game remained 1-1 into the 72nd minute when Sellis took a foul in the penalty area and then buried the penalty kick for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. Westminster played a possession game the remaining 19 minutes and held off a relentless attack from the Great Falls offense.
Val Campbell needed four saves to claim his fifth win on the year. The UGF goal snapped a streak of 193 minutes without allowing a goal for Campbell, and a 328 minute streak for the Griffins overall. Great Falls outshot Westminster 17-8 in the contest.
Westminster will host the annual Alumni game on Sunday, October 4 at noon on Dumke Field. They return to regular season competition on October 9 when they face first-year program Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.
