Men’s Soccer Ties Embry-Riddle

BOX SCORE

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team played to a 3-3 tie against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins couldn't hold a 2-0 lead but maintained their composure to collect the draw. Westminster is now 3-3-1 on the season and 3-0-1 on Dumke Field.

The Griffins got off to a great start taking a 1-0 lead on an Embry-Riddle own goal in the second minute. Just 20 second later Westminster made it 2-0 when Jeff Gardner gained possession in the box, spun, and shot for the goal. At that point, it appeared the Griffins would control the day until Embry-Riddle started attacking.

Felipe Ferreira made it 2-1 when he blasted a shot inside the far post from just outside the 18. Ferreira evened the score at two in the 60th minute when he scored on a breakaway set-up by a great through ball from Magi Mas Manresa. Westminster had a quick answer to that goal when Eddie Cooper finished a breakaway just 30 seconds after the game was tied. Two minutes later it was again Embry-Riddle recording the equalizer. Patrick Patzig headed home a Manresa corner kick for the game's final tally.

The teams played the final 28 minutes and two 10-minute overtime sessions without any scoring to end the game in a tie. Westminster had a few opportunities turned away thanks to great saves by Embry-Riddle keeper Jeremy Muduvsky, including one from against Jeff Gardner from six yards out midway through the second half.

Westminster completes this three-game in three days home stand on Sunday, September 13 when they host No. 23 Bellevue. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 p.m. on Dumke Field.
