BYU-Hawaii Escapes with 2-1 Victory over Westminster

Sarah Swenson recorded her first assist of the season against BYU-Hawaii.

LAIE, Hawaii – The Westminster women's soccer team gave BYU-Hawaii everything they could handle on Saturday evening before falling 2-1. This was the second of three games in Hawaii for Westminster, all against NCAA DII teams. The loss drops the Griffins to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 on the road trip.

Corie Walch gave Westminster a 1-0 lead when she scored from 25 yards out in the 13th minute. This was the first lead of the season for the Griffins and it held until the 34th minute. That was when Emily Mearnes scored her first goal of the season. Mearns then scored the game winner just two minutes later when she scored from 10 yards out. The teams played without a goal for the final 55 minutes of the game.

The goal by Walch was her first of the season and was assisted by Sarah Swenson. It was the first assist of the year for Swenson. Westminster finished the game with eight total shots and put six of those on frame. Dayna Winter-Nolte made two saves, but suffered her second loss of the season.

The Griffins wrap-up the Hawaii trip with a game against Chaminade on Sunday, August 30 in Honolulu. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. (MT) kickoff.
