AZUSA, Calif. – The Westminster women's volleyball team dropped both matches on the first day of the 2009 Cougar Classic hosted by Azusa Pacific University. The Griffins opened the season by falling to No. 20 Biola, 3-0. They followed that with a tough five-set loss against San Diego Christian in the night cap.
Against Biola,
Whitney Roseborough and
Ashley Marchant each recorded seven kills to lead the Griffins. Setter
Megan Evans recorded a double-double in her first collegiate game with 19 assists and 11 digs. The Griffins recorded 56 digs in the match, but struggled to just a .056 hitting percentage. Biola finished the match hitting .240 with much of that being bolstered by the .378 they hit in set two.
In the match against San Diego Christian, the Griffins took the first set before dropping sets two, three, and five in the loss.
Ericka Evans set career highs with 14 kills and 61 attacks. She also matched a career high of 21 digs. Five Griffins recorded double figures in digs, including
Megan Evans who had 19 to go with her 46 assists.
Westminster will face The Master's College and No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) in the final day of competition at the Cougar Classic.
