Westminster Splits Two Matches on Saturday

AZUSA, Calif. – The Westminster women's volleyball team finished the second day of the 2009 Cougar Classic by splitting two matches. The Griffins opened the day with a great five-set win over The Master's College. That was followed with a loss to No. 2 Concordia (Calif.) to end the tournament. The Griffins finished the event with a 1-3 record to start the 2009 season.

Westminster won the first two sets against The Master's College before dropping two straight. In the fifth set, Westminster hit .321 to come away with the 15-11 victory. Ericka Evans led the attack with 16 kills and got help from Ashley Marchant and her 15 kills. Talita Kresser recorded 12 kills with six coming in the final two sets. Becky Burke also set a career high with 10 kills of her own. Tahnie Blymiller was solid in defense, recording 36 digs. Burke added 13 digs for her first career double-double.

The Griffins battled with No. 2 Concordia before falling 3-0. Westminster led much of the third set before Concordia made a late charge to get the victory. Burke and Evans finished with eight kills apiece to lead Westminster. Stephanie Jones had her best match of the tournament with six kills and a hitting efficiency of .545. The Griffins hit just .106 for the match and were blocked 11 times by the nation's second ranked team.

Westminster will return to California next weekend to take part in the Sunbird Invitational hosted by Fresno Pacific University. The tournament begins on Friday, August 28, as the Griffins will face Menlo and Southern Oregon. On Saturday, August 29, Westminster has matches with Cornerstone and the host and defending national champion, Fresno Pacific.
