Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – Playing in front of the largest crowd in Behnken Field House history, the Westminster men's basketball team couldn't overcome the timely shooting of Carroll College on Saturday night, dropping a 78-71 decision. The loss is the first at home for No. 7 Westminster this season and snaps a 16-game home winning streak dating back to January of 2008. The Griffins (24-4, 10-3) trailed for all but two minutes in the second half and hurt them self by shooting just 64.0% from the charity stripe.
“I thought Carroll was terrific tonight,” Westminster head coach Tommy Connor stated. “They just beat us tonight. We missed free throws and some open shots and sometimes the game is as simple as that.”
Geoff Payne led Westminster with 21 points and six rebounds. He struggled from the line going just 7-of-14 at the stripe.
Nate Sanchez finished with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting while
Jeramie Hopson and
Jordan Jacobs scored 13 points each.
Chad Vaculin led Carroll (18-5, 8-4) with 27 points and had four makes from beyond the arc. Josh Saunders added 13 points and Chase Goedecke and Andy Garland chipped in 10 each. Garland also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Westminster will conclude the regular season with a Saturday, February 28 game against Lewis-Clark State. The game from Lewiston, Idaho will tipoff at 9:00 p.m.
