Westminster Stays Perfect at Home

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's basketball team used a 50-35 second half to avenge an earlier loss to Rocky Mountain College on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House. No. 7 Westminster shot 59.3% from the field and only had eight turnovers in the 90-71 victory. The Griffins (24-3, 10-2 Frontier) turned 15 Rocky turnovers into 23 points and held an 18-5 bench scoring advantage.

Geoff Payne shouldered much of the load for Westminster, scoring 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Payne was also a perfect 11-of-11 at the line and grabbed eight rebounds. Jeramie Hopson added a career high 24 points and scored nine in the first ten minutes to set the tone for Westminster.

“We're real excited for the guys,” assistant coach Jason Long said. “This was a big game because of our loss up there. We beat a good team tonight. The guys executed and got us in our stuff so Geoff could carry us. Then Jeramie hit some big shots.”

Danny Stosich scored 11 points off the bench in 23 minutes. Westminster finished with a 31-26 rebounding advantage and turned five offensive rebounds into nine points.

Rocky (18-8, 7-4) was led by 20 points from James Bulluck. They had four players reach double figures and scored 44 points in the paint.

Westminster returns to the Behnken Field House on Saturday, February 21 for a 7:30 p.m. game against Carroll College. The five seniors will be honored prior to tipoff.
