SALT LAKE CITY – Playing on Dumke Field for the final time of 2009, the Westminster women's soccer team defeated Rocky Mountain College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Westminster (5-7-1, 2-0-1 Frontier) got two first half goals en route to their fifth win of the season. The win also opens their lead in the Frontier Conference to one full game over Carroll College with three to play.

Corie Walch struck first for the Griffins when she put home her second goal of the season off a scramble in the box following a corner kick. Heather Hillam attempted the first shot, but it was blocked to Walch who then put it in the net during the third minute.

Rocky Mountain (2-7-0, 1-2-0) got the equalizer during the 10th minute when Allie Beckers blocked a clear attempt from Griffin goalie Lindsay Bekken. The ball deflected into the box where Beckers collected and put it in for her fourth goal on the season.

Megan Maldonado tallied the game-winner for Westminster when she blasted a shot inside the near post from 15 yards out during the 22nd minute. Vanessa Jordan set-up the first game-winner of the season for Maldonado with a great through ball from just outside the box.

The game was quite physical and featured 28 total fouls. Westminster managed a 16-6 advantage in total shots, but each team put four attempts on frame. Nicole Taylor led the Griffins with four shots despite playing the game with a cut on her nose after the opening goal.

Lindsay Bekken earned her second win of the season after recording one save in the game's first 57 minutes. She was replaced by Dayna Winter-Nolte in the 57th minute, who then recorded two saves without allowing a goal during her 33 minutes between the pipes.

The Griffins now have 13 days off before a trip to Oakland, California for two games. The trip begins on October 16 against Mills College and concludes with an October 18 game at Holy Names University.
