ALAMOSA, Colo. –
Tysen Gehring scored in the 107th minute to give the Westminster men's soccer team a 2-1 win in double overtime against Adams State on Sunday afternoon. Westminster dominated the action much of the day, but struggled to finish opportunities. The win is the second of the season against Adams State and improves them to 9-6-1 on the year
Westminster found themselves behind 1-0 in the 61st minute on a Jesse Dunbar goal for Adams State. Westminster played the final 21 minutes of regulation and all of overtime with a man advantage after Peter Freeman received a red card for Adams State.
The Griffins took advantage in the 85th minute as
Jeff Gardner headed home his fourth goal of the season off a cross from
Justin Solomon for the equalizer. The game remained tied 1-1 through the end of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime session. Then in the 107th minute, Gehring put an
Isaac Green free kick into the right side netting for the game winner. It was the first goal of the season for Gehring.
Westminster finished the game with a 44-11 advantage in shots, putting 17 of those opportunities on goal. The Griffins also attempted 18 corner kicks to just two by Adams State. The game featured 10 yellow cards, five on each team, along with the Freeman red card. There was also a combined 40 fouls called, with 18 coming against the Griffins.
Gardner and Green each had 10 shots in the game with Gardner putting six of his of frame.
Daniel Duke, Solomon, and
Bobby Ward all attempted four shots apiece.
Val Campbell picked up his eighth win of the season between the pipes, making two saves in the contest.
Westminster will return to action on Friday, October 30 when they face Southwestern (Ariz.) in Phoenix, Arizona.
