GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Playing NCAA Division II opponent Mesa State on the road was a little too much for the Westminster Griffins. Mesa State scored twice in the final 21 minutes to earn a 3-1 victory. Westminster falls to 6-3-2 on the season.
Mark Stoker scored in the 56th minute for the Griffins, tying the score at one. Mesa State got a goal from Marco Angelo in the 70th minute for the game winner. With the Griffins attacking for the tie, Mesa got another goal from George Hunt in the 85th minute to put the game out of reach.
“This was a tough one for us,” head coach
Chris Dorich commented. “We ended up playing for points and allowed a late goal.”
Shots in the game were fairly even with Mesa State holding a slight 9-8 advantage. Westminster put seven of its eight shots on target. Griffins' goalkeeper Val Campbell had one save and his back-up KC John turned away two Maverick shots. The game featured 25 fouls, six yellow cards, and Westminster's Andrew Tovstein was given a red card in the 83rd minute.
Westminster will return to the pitch on Sunday, September 28 when they face Colorado State-Pueblo. That game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
