Westminster Takes Care of Northern New Mexico, 90-34

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster concluded the Homestead Studio Suites Thanksgiving Classic with a 90-34 win against Northern New Mexico on Saturday night. No. 13 Westminster shot 50.8 percent from the floor and scored 50 second half points in the victory. The win improves Westminster to a school record 9-0. Northern New Mexico drops to 1-9 with the loss.

Westminster used a 16-3 run in the middle of the first half to put the game out of reach. They shot just 44.8 percent in the opening 20 minutes, but solid defense held Northern New Mexico to just 20.8 percent shooting in the same half. Geoff Payne scored 11 of his team high 13 points in the half to carry the Griffins.

Michael Stockton turned the second half into his coming out party. Stockton scored 11 points, dished out five assists, and recorded three steals in the second stanza. He also grabbed five rebounds in the second half, giving him a career high eight on the game. Jeramie Hopson, Jake Harley, and Conner Nielsen all added nine points for Westminster.

Westminster dominated every statistical category. They held a 46-31 rebounding advantage and a 34-18 advantage in the paint. The Griffins forced 23 turnovers which resulted in 25 Westminster points, 20 coming on the fast break.

Darrell Adams led Northern New Mexico with 15 points, but was just 7-of-17 shooting. Charles Williams recorded six rebounds and five assists for the Eagles.

Westminster next faces Western State in Colorado on Friday, December 5. That game will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will be the first of seven straight games away from home for the Griffins.
