NAMPA, Idaho – The Westminster track & field team opened the 2014-15 campaign on Saturday at the Jackson's Open at the Jackson's Indoor Track. The teams combined to set four school records at the meet while 10 Griffins made their collegiate debuts.
On the men's side,
Joseph Feichko established a Westminster indoor record in the 400 meter run with his time of 50.20 seconds. That time surpasses his personal-best and old record by 0.77 seconds. A team of
Dylan Chatters,
Joe Cremer, Feichko, and
Mitchell Sims set the Griffin record in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:31.41. That was five seconds quicker than the previous record set last January.
Naena Bland led the Griffin women with a new school-record time of 2:26.19 in the 800 meter run. In just her second collegiate race, Bland set the new record by under five seconds. A record also fell in the long jump when
Justine Kueffner broke her own school-best by jumping 5.07 meters. Kueffner has the six longest indoor long jumps in school history.
Chandler Clark became the first Griffin male to compete in the shot put and weight throw at an indoor event. He posted a mark of 14.18 meters in the shot put and then went 13.10 meters in the weight throw.
Ofa Halaufia had the third-longest mark for a Griffin woman in the shot put at 9.13 meters in her first competition.
The Griffins will be back in action on January 9-10 when they compete at the BYU Cougar Collegiate Invitational in Provo, Utah.
